Drake University program(s) overview

Master of Arts in Communication: Communication Leadership Track

The curriculum for Drake University's Master of Arts in Communication program is diverse. The 33-hour program is made up of courses that focus on business ethics, organizational finance, digital strategies and more. Unlike its Brand Communication or Public Affairs and Advocacy counterparts, Drake's Communication Leadership track requires students to complete nine hours of business electives as opposed to digital storytelling or policy courses. This graduate program concludes with a capstone that is taught by Dr. Kelly Bruhn. The capstone requires students, like myself, to apply the knowledge they've gained from previous courses in the creation of an in-depth project that could be executed in a variety of ways (i.e., department strategy redevelopment).

Master of Science in Business Analytics

Drake's Master of Science in Business Analytics degree curriculum changed in 2022. Because I had completed various core courses as electives as part of my earlier graduate degree (or as part of this degree), the alteration wasn't as rough as it could've been. Unlike the master's degree in communication, this is a 36-hour program and has a heavier business orientation. Further organizational finance, information technology systems, and corporate governance courses are a few examples that illustrate this lean. Nine of the 36 hours are dedicated to the area of specialization. Because I chose the business analytics route, specialized courses focused on data management, information technology (i.e., ethics, systems, database queries, etc.) and project management. This graduate degree concludes with a capstone (Strategic Business Processes) that uses the organizational processes of external and internal environmental analysis for the formulation of business strategy.

Master of Arts in Communication capstone project: Personalizing news subscriptions for the Millennial audience

In my quantitative study, I focused on the highly sought after Millennial consumer. More specifically, I measured ten Millennial respondents' opinions about a potential personalized subscription option (vs. a traditional news subscription) in relation to their feelings of news fatigue. The project features analysis of Gannett (i.e., background, historical financial performance, competitive advantages, etc.) and an overview of Millennial news consumers (i.e., typology, interaction with subscription services, effect of news fatigue, etc.). There are also brief discussions about the project's data collection methods, respondent demographics and the construction of the survey sent to them. The study ends with my interpretation of survey results as well as a suggested timeline for implementing the proposed offering.

Master of Arts in Communication financial literacy final project: Publishing industry financial trends and comparison

This was a biggy. While the final project for Drake's financial literacy course was not as broad in terms of applying concepts as the capstone project, the intricacies and detail associated with organizational finance required a great amount of attention (and math). My project compared the financial performance of three publishing companies: Gannett, Lee Enterprises and Meredith Corporation. To perform the analysis, the firms' income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements from 2017-2019 (2019 was the year I took this course). After the analysis of the organizations' financial documents, I applied my understanding of pertinent financial ratios and gauged performance relative to one another. Valuation methods (future value, present value, payback method, net present value) were then used to determine which firm is  the "best" investment.

Master of Arts in Communication: Leadership portfolio and development plan

MBA 254 (Leadership and human capital development) was one of the three business electives I completed during the Master of Arts in Communication program. It is also a core course in the Master of Science in Business Analytics degree curriculum. Over the six-week course, I took three assessments (Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), Big Five Personality Test and Influence Behavior Questionnaire) that were designed gauged different leadership tendencies. The final project was somewhat introspective in the sense that it inquired about how views regarding effective leadership had developed. A significant portion of the project was centered around analyzing the results of the aforementioned assessments (my scores for each metric/assessment are included in the PDF below). It concludes with my plan for personal leadership development.
