Boulder and Springfield were once the size of Columbia. Here’s how they stack up today.
This was a collaborative effort for an edition focused on the development of Columbia, Mo. The intent was to compare the college town's approach to growth relative to Boulder, Co. and Springfield, Mo. Boulder was chosen because it is dramatically different from any other city in the U.S. in how it handles population growth. Springfield was selected because of its shared characteristics with Columbia as well as its proximity. I authored the section about Boulder, and it turned out that the way that they've handled growth is nothing new to its residents. However, Boulder's approach impacted rent prices, property values and other economic points of intrigue in some interesting ways.
Vox Magazine sat down with Washington to talk about whether there have been changes regarding race relations at MU, CS 1950 and more
The University of Missouri was in the news frequently during the fall of 2015 because of deteriorating race relations and level of trust between Concerned Student 1950 and the UM System. This was written months after the peak of events on campus, and I hoped to hear that there was improvement in demonstrators' eyes. Unfortunately, the individual that I interviewed felt nothing had changed. This was an update on what was going on within the student activist group in response to their demonstration in which they proceeded into a UM System Board of Curators Finance Committee meeting.
Stevenson spoke at Jesse Auditorium about the drive for change at MU and beyond
Stevenson lectured eloquently and told stories of discrimination that made the audience cringe on many occasions. However, the lecture wasn't just reiterating his past experiences. He had a clear message: For things to change, there has to be people willing to do what is uncomfortable.
